Across Europe, NGOs are struggling to decolonize their relationships with their partners, as well as their internal procedures, protocols and organizational patterns. But what exactly does it mean to “decolonize my NGO”? And what are the main external and internal obstacles to such an endeavor? At this workshop, NGO-platforms PARTOS (The Netherlands), CNCD-11.11.11 (Belgium) and Coordination Sud (France) will share experiences and insights from their members & partners as well as their own efforts to decolonize. Workshop-participants will be offered analytical and practical tools to deepen their understanding as to why decolonizing “my NGO” is important and of how they potentially contribute to power asymmetries, how they may unwittingly persist in profiting from structural privilege, and how they can shift the power away from such asymmetries and privilege.
The workshop will introduce tools such as the “power-awareness tool” and address shifting the power on the level of inclusive communication and Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (PMEL). At the end of the workshop, participants will be equipped to initiate a process of decolonization within their own organizations and partnerships, both on a structural and programmatic level.
The workshop will take place in English (with translation to French) on Wednesday, May 21st from 9h to 14h15 at the Cercle de Coopération, 1-7 Rue St. Ulric L-2651 Luxembourg.
